19 Dec Give Back with Project Open Hand and Homeboy Industries

It’s that time of year where the trees are lit, people are feasting, and the season is brimming with opportunities to give back. At Humphry Slocombe, we make sure our ice cream during this time does more than satisfy one’s sweets cravings.

This season, we’ve partnered with amazing charities like Project Open Hand and Homeboy Industries to help those who are less fortunate. During the entire month of December, visit any of our shops and donate to Project Open Hand (SF and Oakland) or Homeboy Industries (LA). Keep reading to learn more about what each nonprofit organization does to give back.

Project Open Hand – San Francisco, Oakland

Project Open HandTheir mission: To improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable, caring for and educating our community.

Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand relies on food to improve the lives of those who are ill and vulnerable. With hopes of improving health and stamina through nutritious meals made with love, Project Open Hand prepares 2,500 meals and gives away 200 bags of healthy groceries every single day with the help of more than 125 volunteers. Their patrons are typically battling serious illnesses, dealing with isolation, or facing the health challenges that come with aging.

Homeboy Industries – Los Angeles

Homeboy Industries

Their mission: To provide hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community.

For formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated individuals, Homeboy Industries might be one of the few glimmers of hope they have to lead a fulfilling life after trouble. Homeboy Industries operates under the goal of offering resources such as tattoo removal to anger management and a supportive community to help redirect these men and women to become contributing members of society. More than 200 men and women are offered full-time employment while they participate in an 18-month program to help them redefine their life paths.

Even though donations are accepted at Humphry Slocombe every day in December, don’t forget that you can volunteer with and donate to these charities and more throughout the year. Stop by our 10th birthday celebration at our SF Mission and LA Venice shops to grab a free scoop of ice cream and consider giving a donation to Project Open Hand and Homeboy Industries. Happy holidays from Humphry Slocombe!
